Roger Whittaker donated to The Legion National Foundation Digital Poppy

In 1944 my Mom had a fiancé – David Gold. David Private, Stretcher Bearer, A Company, Royal Winnipeg Rifles, was in Normandy on June 8 1944 in the service of his fellows, God, King & country when he was murdered by SS Major Gerhard Bremer, Commander, 12th Reconnaissance Battalion, at the Château d’Audrieu. How does one become murdered in a war? Pte Gold was wearing the Red Cross arm band. Internationally recognized as a non combatant by both sides of any conflict. Mom (Bonnie( Bonneau ) Whittaker) pined for David everyday there after. She once told me that those responsible were arrested and brought to the place where she worked during the war as she was serving in Canadian Women’s Army Corps -CWAC — she expected monsters to be lead into the room – Mom related that a bunch of handsome young men came into the room. Blue eyes, Blond hair, exceptionally young and very handsome. She said she was shocked considering the gruesome crimes committed. Read about the event here http://ssns.frontiersd.mb.ca/…/Educa…/BremerMurders.html The Legion is doing this campaign for a digital poppy with commemoration for someone – I choose David for this one as a tribute to Mom – When I was 8 or 9 I meet David’s sister Mary. Indeed it was in her house I saw Star Trek show for the first time. I have no idea if there are any living relatives of pte. David Gold.
